So I went on a twitter rant the other day because I’m pissed. I’m pissed that stupid fucking pop song is getting so much attention when is so clearly problematic. And before anyone starts that I’m “not focusing on the real problem” or “just mad that a plus sized girl is proud of her body”- obviously you’ve never seen me. I’m a 4’11” blotchy skinned hairy Italian with freaky muscular legs, chubby inner thighs, and a soft stomach full of rolls. I in no way fit into society’s standard for the beautiful white western woman: washboard abs, smooth tan skin, hairless body. I’m chubby, I’m confident, and I love my body. But there’s no fucking way I agree with that songs message or identify with that artist in any way.

I grew up helping raise my two younger cousins. Right now they’re 12 and 10, respectively. The eldest takes after my aunt: she has an abnormally high metabolism and cannot gain wait. She has struggled with body image issues since she was six because other kids make fun of her prominent bones and lack of fat. I’ve found her crying her eyes out in the kitchen after my grandmother spent an hour telling her she needs to eat more or everyone will think she’s ugly and skinny forever. It’s this kind of body shaming which is just as damaging to a girls self esteem as fat shaming it is to a bigger girl like myself.

This song is fucked up. So fucked up. The lyrics are clear:
“Yeah, my mama she told me don’t worry about your size
She says boys like a little more booty to hold at night
You know I won’t be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll
So if that’s what you’re into then go ahead and move along…

…Go ahead and tell them skinny bitches that
No I’m just playing I know you think you’re fat”

Seriously how much more problematic can you get? This is the kind of shit that makes me furious. Why do all these white “feminist” “body positive!!!” girls feel like they need to shame girls who are different than them in order to feel good about themselves? I get that being +sized is hard when society is throwing all these images of skinny white hairless women at you 24/7.

But this isn’t how to go about revolutionizing the way people see body positivity. This isn’t working, and it’s damaging to the self esteem of so many young girls who can’t help their smaller size. Not every skinny girl is confident and happy about her size. And not every skinny girl thinks she’s fat, or has an eating disorder that makes her look the way she looks. They aren’t “bitches” just because they have trouble gaining weight. I understand that a lot of people like me are struggling to feel comfortable in their own skin. But if you want to say “every body is beautiful!” and “fuck beauty standards!”, you’d better do it right. Stop calling skinny girls bitches. Stop turning your anger towards society’s beauty standards on women who can’t help the way the look. Stop hating on other girls to make yourself feel better. Girl hate is poisonous, and all you’re doing is poisoning the body positivity movement with your ignorance.

End of rant.

Edit: Also as my lovely and very well versed friend just pointed out: “The song places women’s worth on having curves in all the ~right places~ to attract boys. And shaming women for having “silicone” bodies reinforces the toxic idea that having plastic surgery makes people frauds.” I think my points been made even clearer.

seriously let me love you omfg you put it into words
